Okay...When folks usually turn a milestone number, they do something out of the ordinary, etc. Jump out of a plane, bungee jump, etc. Well in a few months, I am going to turn a major number...and I decided what I want to do before I turn this wonderful number. I want to catch a SNOOK. How do I go about this? I have a boat, 24 Searay, and I know it's not shallow enough to up to a mangrove, but I really want to try this. Any ideas?

Mr. OB already told me, "I didn't get you a flats boat." NO KIDDING...has a nice hull, but it's not too deep. We go up off of Cayo Costa, and Boca and fish, but so far, haven't gotten anything but a few little jacks. But I'm telling you, I need to catch one. :)

Does Mr. OB know how to throw a cast net? Or do you?
The bait you need is shiners, pinfish, threadfins, or shrimp.
You catch them with a cast net on or near grass flats. To attract them mix up some chum. There are lots of different recipes out there.
The easiest way is just to anchor out near a grass flat and toss some pinches of chum out into the water. The shiners come by and cast on them. This could take a while sometimes
You can buy shiners as bait also but catching bait is just part of the day and shiners usually aren't cheap as far as bait goes. If you catch thread fins get them into your live well in a hurry or they'll croak real quick. Pinfish and Shiners are a bit hardier.
Use a 6'6" or 7' medium action rod and spinning reel with 10-12lb test and a 30lb leader. A good standard hook is a 3/0 circle hook. If you want to use power pro braided line go with 15lb. It's easier for tying knots. Don't use weight on your line. Only use probably a 2-3ft leader. 3ft being the maximum. Get a bobber. Put the bobber just above the knot where the line meets the leader.
Best places to fish are out on the flats. Or park you boat just on the edge of the flats and cast into them. The flats don't have to be super shallow. Try to get somewhere near an open sandy spot in the flats. Sometimes referred to as "potholes." Cast into potholes.
Mangroves lines also work well. Especially if there are grass flats associated with them.
Snook are smart fish. You could go out and catch everything except a snook. But it's still a good time.
Hook the bait either under the bridge of the nose between the eyesor under the dorsal fin. Make sure you get ample bait because you'll go through it.
Oh yeah...Snook are out of season. So make sure you throw it back. |

Yes, we have a cast net. I know how to throw it. :) So does my son. Thanks for the tips..i'm screwed...we aren't allowed to use the bait well for bait....err...our boat is a sundeck and it's for fun time, not fishing time. :( And yeah, I'd throw it back anyways. Thanks so much. :)

| You may not be totally screwed. There are setups where you can use a large cooler as a bait well. You can likely find them online or at west marine or something like that. |

go underneath the Sanibel 'b' span, old road and throw your net there, usually one cast will provide all of the threads you'll need, then head to Big Pine Key, just to the west of St. James city. with your boat, make sure it's a rising tide or you'll get stuck. live chum under the mangroves opposite of Big Pine, and cast your bait at the same time. be ready! i use a 6'6" berkley lightening rod (heavy action)and an Okuma 30 spinner, with 30lb green power pro and an 18" 40lb flouro leader. you will need the heavyer line to 'rope' em out of the barnacle encrusted mangrove roots, we've hooked up with snook in the 38" to 40" range there. there is a grouper hole at the very end of the mangrove island, we've picked up 'gags' to 30" there.
