Anyone ever plant bamboo to use as a fence? Anyone know much about it other than it's use for flooring?
Just read a thing in TIME about using it as "green" fencing. Just have to pick a species that's easy to control.

The only thing I know about it is that it grows extremely fast. I bet you could turn it into a little side income though by selling it to local craftsman when you need to thin it out.

I've heard there are two types. Ones that grow lateral and ones that grow medial. I think that would be important to know if you want a fence .

| I planted some golden bamboo a few years ago and the plant has taken off. It's quite pretty and very tall. My only complaint is I planted it too close to my pool cage and the leaves that fall off collect in the gutters. If I could do it over again, I'd plant it far away from the house. The golden gets quite tall and probably wouldn't be good as a fence. You never know where the shoots will come up next. |

| Yeah i'd like to find a species that is easier to control. I don't want my back yard to become a bamboo forest. Though it would look kinda cool. |

The golden isn't that bad but just tall. I've had worse and that was banana plants. They were invasive and hard to get rid of. Have you considered using palms or hibiscus?

try arecia palms, non spreading, full. mine are 18'+ in 5 years, minimal care. one heck of a barrier, and when they get taller the bottom fronds can be trimmed for underplanting. a good choice <jmho>

These are all interesting choices for a fence. I wonder how tall these bamboos and those other plants grow. I can't have anything that will grow as high as the electrical wires. I need a privacy fence since they built a home in the back and I can't use the hot tub like I want to.

| Excellent suggestion, Coon. I was thinking about those palms but didn't remember the name. |

Stylin, the bamboo that I have seen is very tall, as tall as the electric wires.
Better get something, that hot tub is a waiting girl!

I know Dancin', I think those palms might be a good idea. I think the bamboo might be too thin. Those palms can get real thick and obscure everyone's view. Ahhh, privacy!

I suppose your right, the lawn guy probably will like that because less grass to mow. I think some bamboo can be the same way. The guy next door has the palms, they don't seem invasive to the power lines but they do bush out and cover a lot of ground. Very thick too. For privacy I think they might be better but I bet they are expensive.

I think those palms would be better for privacy than bamboo. The bamboo really branches out wide and gets very tall but not real thick like the palms. Also, as it gets taller, the leaves are more toward the top of the stalk. My bamboo is about 20 feet tall and the lower stalks are bare. The leaves also make quite a mess.
Someone in my neighborhood planted the palms around his pool area a few years ago and you can't see into his backyard at all now.
Planting the bamboo seemed like a good idea at the time but I'm seriously thinking about cutting it down. |

Gee CThomp thanks for starting this thread, I'm thinking more seriously about having those palms put in. I wonder if I can find a reasonable landscaper to install them?

I think you're probably better off with the palms. Why don't you start a thread for landscaper recommendations? I've found the ideas and suggestions shared here to be a great help.
I don't have anyone in mind to suggest to you. Ask the landscaper for opinions about the palms versus the bamboo. |

I've actually already got quite a few of those palms.
We just had a bunch of landscaping done and had all the palms cleaned up. We thought about removing them but decided against it. I had a couple of trees removed and a bunch of brush cleared as well as having those palms cleaned up and some oaks and an olive tree trimmed back away from the house.
We were also going to do a privacy fance but now we think we're probably just going to do privacy fences for the side yards. Green coated chain link for the sides. And a shadow boax privacy fence for across the back. |
