My new Laptop just came today. Well I should say VikingFans new Laptop. LOL He says I hog this puter up between being on here and working at night on the puter.
So my question is anything I need to do...Like do I need a surge protector for it. Also any thing I need besides the Anti-Virus protector?
I'm so excited. Feels like Christmas. Now I'm just waiting for my leather Furniture to arrive and I'll be happy.

Antivirus and firewalling are required for every computer to be safe.
Yes, a surge protector is a good idea. There are several "in line" models that work very well:

I recommend an inline unit because it doesn't add a lot of bulk to the unit itself when you're carrying it around. The one linked above will strap to the square box that is the laptop's power supply.
Do you have wireless internet set up (and secured) yet? If not, that is also highly recommended. Cables are no fun on a portable computer.

yes to surge protector with battery backup. i use APC backup ups cs 350, even though my laptop is wireless, still gotta charge the batteries puters usually come with 'norton' sorry POS! the only thing it does halfway decent is detecting 'active x'. McAfee is no better. get zone alarm for the firewall, i use AVG/reg cure for virus protection, they also have a decent spyware program. logon to www.trendmicro.com every so often, it sometimes finds stuff my other programs don't, and it's free. i also use 'regestry fix' (but that's another story; don't use this program if you are a novice!)

Thanks Radio and Coon for your Replies.
Radio I do not have a wireless internet set up yet. How do I go about doing that? I'm not really all that knowlegable about computers. Especially Wireless Internet.

Use one of these:

It's what I use. Very easy to configure and it actually has decent range and capability. Be sure and enable Wireless Encryption and passwords, do NOT leave it open to the public. It has instructions for most of that, but give me a call if you run into trouble.

Radio we went and purchased that router at Staples. VikingFan had a dickens of a time getting it all going. But I am on the Laptop now and it's wireless.
We are so excited. Now I can bring it with me when I go away. I'm so happy. Thanks for your help.
