Has anyone had experience with the spray-in foam attic insulation? Pros, cons?

No real cons other than cost. It's not cheap.

Pro's are that you'll have an average r-value of R-6 per inch.

I'm thinking about this once my addition is done. But I guess we'll see what kind of deal I can get.

I'm finding some DIY kits online. The two tanks, hose and nozzles are running about $650 for 600 board feet. The foam should be applied 3" thick to achive the minimum R-19. That calculates to $3250 for 1000 sq ft roof area. I'm hearing that it will cost about $6,000 - 7,000 to have an insulation company do it.

$6K to $7K is alot. Wow. Maybe I won't do that. I'm doing a metal roof so that'll take care of alot of things for me. And then just maybe some old fashioned batts or something. I guess I'll have to make that decision soon enough.

It's suppose to be less expensive if it's done while under construction. Our neighbor just had their large addition done for around $5K. We currently have a metal roof and batt insulation laying on top of the ceiling. The foil vapor barriers between the roof joists are coming down and our 2nd floor is really humid. I like the idea of creating an entire vapor barrier at the roof line with the foam and eliminating the ventilated attic. It's also suppose to make the roof stronger. We have ventilated soffit facia. We'll probably have to replace it with a solid so the foam doesn't drip out like icicles. A question I have is how would you ever find out if you have a roof leak or locate it?

Just found a company that gave me a rough quote of $1.65 per sq ft. Much better pricing than what I've been hearing.

Got the quote today, comes out to about $1.65 a square plus some extra $ to remove the existing vapor barrier at the roof line. They spray 3-4" and gives about an R=20. They also said we would have a 10 degrees difference between conditioned space and attic temperature with this product. I think we may even do the garage attic at that price.

Well, today's the day! I've got three gentlemen running around in white suites and masks. Looks like an episode from the movie E.T. My only concern is we haven't caught our 4 legged 'friend' that has been in the attic for over a month. Hope he doesn't get encapsulated.

About 2350 between the house and garage attic.

Roughly 1.25 sqft. But the sq ft of our house is rough because of the roof pitch and gables so it may be between $1.25 to 1.65. They gave me an add of $400 to remove the foil vapor barrier at the roof line but had a friend looking for side money do it for us. I'm impressed, we have a very tight attic on the house. The garage attic has plenty of room. You're welcome to stop by and see the workmanship.

I'm gonna have 2,689 under roof. But 652 of that is garage and back porch.

A little under 1000sqft of my place is the old house. It has a ceiling and the roof is a 4:12 pitch. Which isn't to bad for an older house.

The addition will add the other just over a 1,000 sqft of space and the roof decking is still totally exposed. Application would be super simple.

The ceiling in the garage and porch are still exposed as well.

We decided to do the garage because that's our storage area. It's a two car and cost $950 to do it. I'm anxious to see the temperature difference in there as that's the area we do most of our projects. When we built our porch, we insulated it with Styrofoam. Mainly for sound and in case it gets enclosed down the road. If you can, I would recommend foaming all of it.

Do they do just under the roof deck?

And you HAVE to let me know what the difference is in your next power bill.

Perfect time of year to have this done. If your power bill goes down from June to July that'd be awesome.

Yes, it's sprayed under the roof deck and sides of the Attic ranging from 4" to 6" thick and creating and enclosed space. I'll let you know what the power bill does. The second story of our house has always had a cooling/humidity issue. This past weekend we found out why when removing the foil barrier. The existing batt insulation was weaved through the trusses in many areas instead of laying on top of the drywall thus not creating a solid the insulation envelope. I hope to be able to feel the changes.

What i'd like to find is a foam spray that can be pumped into shallow crawlspaces. Even if the stuff only had an R value of R-1 per inch i'd be happy.

Tell the guys that they need to invent that.

tigerfoam.com they have a slow rise for spaces like that. When you say crawlspace, what are you trying to accomplish with foam?

Fill the damned thing in. My crawl space is only 16" tall. So it's basically pointless.

A foam fill could fill it all in, keep out termites, add a small insulative value, and above all else just seal it. I'd love for it to be sealed in....cheaply.

I am anxious to see what difference it makes in your electric bill, too. Mine are ridiculous.

I'll look at the meter tonight and see if I can get some prelim numbers over the next few days and compare to last year. This morning the house felt great. No condensation on the windows or tin roof.

Ok, I've got some prelim numbers after 5 days. So far we are on a trend of saving about 300 kw per month which is around $34.44 a month. Payback should be about 5 years. But I will say that sleeping through the night because we have constant temperature and humidity control upstairs is priceless.
In addition we're saving about another 320 kw/mth with the new windows. We still have several french doors and exit doors to replace to get the house sealed completely. I figure the payback on the new windows is approx. 1,569 years. J/K
