I'm planning on a kinda short probably 6' tall privacy hedge around the my front yard and part of side yard. Are there any fruit trees that can be hedges? Especially if there were a few different trees that I could grow for variety.

Right now i'm planning to use sea grapes for my hedge. Maybe even if I was able to mix in a few of the fruiting hedge trees with the sea grapes. That'd be cool.

Barbados cherry's are supposed to be very drought tolerant too. That's a good thing. I guess they rely on irrigation for fruiting but otherwise they're good without water.

I haven't heard of or seen pomegranites growing here. If you find some, please let me know. That is one of my favorite fruits.

Can you eat Barbados cherrys?

Barbados cherries are supposed to be tastey. I read that they are commercially harvested in ome countries.

I've never seen pomegranites growing anywhere around here either. I just read about it.

That is a good site. I guess pomegranites are fairly rare. Might have to bring it back.

the cheeries have an unusual flavor, kind of either love or hate deals. they are higher in Vit. C as rose hips.
these cheeries are also known as the 'acerola cherry' one drop of acerola cherry juice in 8oz of apple juice has more vit.C than 8oz of OJ!

I'm thinkin a healthy mix of seagrape, barbados cherry, and a 2-3 pomegranites for my front and side hedge. That'd look nice.

I've been interested in this discussion since I'd like to plant something along my new fence (by my neighbors from he!!). I've come to the conclusion that to keep them out of my yard at the seawall, I need some nasty, thorny plant. I came up with a combo of pigmy date palm and bougainvillea. (sp)?? The thorns on them are awesome. I didn't ask if the plam really produced fruit but the thorns look pretty mean.

And they are. Bouganvilia grow super thick. That's the kinda plant that we used to lose balls in when I was a kid. We didn't go looking for them. Give Sanibel's native tree nursery a call and ask about native drought tolerant plants that have nasty thorns. They'll accomodate. They're prices out there are actually resonable last time I was there.

I'm liking the idea of this barbados cherry. Drought tolerant and 1 cherry is equal to 12 oranges?

Holy crap that's some healthy stuff.

I'm thinking a staggerred mix of seagrapes, barbados cherry, and pomegranites at this point. I've got about 80ft of hedge line to work with.

you may want to check into wild roses (florabunda)they're a viney sticker bush with pretty little flowers, and they grow pretty quick. i've seen them with either pink or white flowers, and as CT said...many balls were lost to those bushes!

also, 'crown of thorns' has some pretty nasty's on it too.

honey locust has some fierce thorns on it too.

Hey guys, I thinking about road tripping to P.G. Saturday to check out Top Tropicals and their barbados. Anyone want me to check into anything while I'm up there?

Went to Top Tropicals yesterday. What a neat place. The Owner is very knowledgeable on fruiting plants. We got two Barbados Cherries, a strawberry tree (the berries taste like cotton candy) and a few other exotics. A deer came out of the woods while there and started licking my elbow. Scared the he*l out of me.

Ah man! That would have been cool! Not seeing the hell scared out of you but being that close to a deer.

I would have joined you if I was home. If you go again, let me know!
