Your post made me miss my grandma pup. She has been gone for 23 years but I was closer to her then anyone else in my life.
I am going to Georgia for Thanksgiving. I am making a zillion desserts lol.

I love to cook desserts. I only make one per month throughout the year because if I made alot, I would need to be rolled around town in a wheelbarrow. But during the holidays, I turn into a dessert machine lol.
I am having a cookie baking party for my grandkids a week before Christmas. Anyone want to do a cookie exchange?

Never heard of 7 layer cookies but it sounds like something the kids might have fun with. I'll look around.

There are a few Satellite based ISPs, they universally suck, if any other option is available to you. It would be best to use DSL or Cable.
Satellite service WILL be interrupted with rain, just like the video signal is.
Cable companies tend to have a higher customer care capability, and are used to dealing with consumers. Phone companies are more business oriented, and therefore don't react well to the vagaries of the small home customer.
So generally I recommend cable, however, "That's Comcastic" has become a sarcastic phrase around my house, usually denoting something that we're decidedly unhappy about. So there really is no "good choice" it's all picking the best of several bad choices.
I heard that in the hurricane hit areas, it takes a lot longer for them to get the cable lines back up as opposed to the phone lines.
There's no cable where we live, and no DSL available through Embarq here either. If we switched to another phone company, do you think they'd have DSL or do we live in a DSL black hole regardless of the carrier?
What about those devices for the computer that boost speed? Are they worth the money?

DSL is wholey dependant on how recent the fibre optic lines are. The barrier to getting DSL is to have out of date phonelines. If Embarq says no, then I doubt that anyone else will be able to supply it.... unless Embarq simply does not want to provide it. I would ask Embarq why you can't have it and if its because of the fibre optics lines ask them when they will be updated. They are supposed to be working on offering to all their customers. Of course, that was a promise that Sprint made.

It's not a bad idea to keep a dial up account as a 'backup' if you really need Internet Access after storms. Many service providers offer a very inexpensive option, (9.95 per month from NetZero comes to mind). You could simply keep the service turned on during Hurricane season.
I used SprintPCS after the storms last year, to get Internet on my laptop. I require Internet access for work, so it was requisite that I have a backup. That worked out very well for me.
If you're in a rural area, far away from a CO (Central Office) then your other high speed phone option is ISDN. Many telephone companies will offer ISDN or IDSL to very far away places. This would likely be better than satellite for daily use, if it is available to you.
As to the "speed enhancer" products. They do offer a small benefit, if you're stuck on dial up. Don't waste money on any speed enhancer that is not provided by your dial up internet access provider. Only purchase the 'enhanced dialup' directly from the provider. They are the only ones that can actually ensure that you'll get better speed.
They normally provide this by adding to your monthly bill. They will often give you a free trial as well. If you feel you aren't getting your money's worth, you can always cancel the additional service, and not be out money for a software package which didn't work.

I don't like speed enhancers because pretty much what they do is suppress and quarantine the spyware which is what causes slow connections. Better to install adaware and spybot. The take the spyware off.....

Some people are just that way wondering. Both my boys are slender yet they eat like they have been starving for days. My boyfriend too. Doesn't matter how much I cook, whatever I don't eat, he does and he is a rail. He also has a sweet tooth. Makes me crazy all those goodies he can eat and not gain and ounce lol.

Dakota,
The family all had the virus........chest congestion and a raspy cough.
Of coarse my husband thought he had it the worse.
Makes sure you get lots of extra rest and fluids.

Ah - I thank you. He is cute. You are so good with those things. I don't have any and don't need to download another thing on this laptop!!!
Now, Fuzpup as for turkey day I am staying home and having a Marie Callendar frozen turkey dinner!!! I know - not exciting but since I can't drive very far (like 2 hrs. to Tampa) I think it's my safest place. My son is having his annual FSU vs UF party on Sat. at his ranch outside of Tampa but I can't go. I hate to miss it (even if we will probably lose) but with a cast of thousands there it is just too much for me. I can't sit in a chair comfortably and taking up his sofa is out of the question since folks will want to sit there and I don't think he has a recliner - sooooo.
Sorry to hear about your grandmother. That's what my mom had too and she left us in Aug. of '01. Be sure to spend time with her and get her to talk about her life, give you some history of the family, bakcground etc. I did that with Mom and tape recorded it. Wish I had had more time to get more info from her. Wish I had thought of that with my grandparents. I am working on geneologies on both sides. Very interesting.
OK - back to chillin' and time for a pain pill.
